On the syndicated radio program “America Tonight with Kate Delaney,” author Sherinda Pringle discussed her book, “The Journey of Rediscovering Me,” and the experiences that inspired it.

Sherinda Pringle’s The Journey of Rediscovering Me is a story about an ordinary woman with an extraordinary faith in God. This book takes the readers on a walk with her in her life as she reflects on the struggles she encountered. With faith, she navigated the hurdles with perseverance, ultimately achieving her life’s triumphs.

Kate Delaney invited Sherinda to discuss her book and writing journey on America Tonight.

Sherinda Pringle. Author. Therapist. Advocate.

Kate Delaney asked the author, Sherinda Pringle, about her journey in the professional world. Sherinda shared her background as a therapist and an advocate for the blind and visually impaired.

“I’ve been a therapist for over 25 years. I’ve worked with various populations of people – the chronically mentally ill. I’ve done general counselling, which is what I do for most of the part now, worked for not-for-profits, and I’ve spent 18 years of my life now working for the state of Illinois as a rehabilitation counselor for people with disabilities, especially for people who are blind and visually impaired.”

Everything is About Perception

Kate proceeded to ask Sherinda about her writing journey as an author. Sherinda described the process as a “tug-of-war” because she didn’t have the plan to write her story, but was left with no choice when she was on bed rest, reflecting on her life.

Writing the book was a tug-of-war. I didn’t really want to write it. I had no choice but to reflect because I’m on bed rest and I can’t go anywhere. Then, looking forward and understanding that everything is about perception. And if you perceive a terrible life, then you have a terrible life. But if you change your perception, you have the ability to alter your life and live the beautiful, prosperous life that we all really dream about.

The Opportunity to Live in Femininity

Sherinda shared that while writing her book, she wanted to convey vulnerability. When Kate asked her what she learned about herself in the process, Sherinda reflected that she had not lived in her femininity because she was taught to be strong, even as a person with a disability.

You know, as women, we’re taught to be strong. And as an African-American woman with a disability. Some people don’t know I have a visual impairment. All my life, I was taught to be strong. And I really never got an opportunity to live in that soft place – to live in my femininity. And so, I learned to be vulnerable, to let go and to allow people around me to assist me, which is a journey of progress, and to live in my femininity.”

Sharing the Vulnerability is Empowering

Host Kate Delaney emphasized that the author’s vulnerability played a significant role in her book. She then asked Sherinda if helping the people made her feel good. Author Sherinda Pringles said the process made her feel empowered, as it also unleashed a sense of worth. She also shared that this led her to some fantastic opportunities. She added,

This young man, Stefan Anderson, had produced, in collaboration with Marshall Gibson, the director, a film that they wanted me to be part of, Life in My Eyes. And this film just so happened to have won the Black Harvest Film Festival, Sergio Mims Award for Best Short. Their highest award. And all I did was say yes. And I am so grateful that we thought about me as he was pursuing new things.”

“The Journey of Rediscovering Me” is Not a Self-help Book

Before the interview ended, Kate Delaney asked Sherinda what the readers would find out in her book. Sherinda replied,

The book is not a self-help book. It’s written as a story. If people read the book, they will have the opportunity to reflect on their own situations and find out about themselves. Find out that the winds of change are within us. That we have the power to alter our lives. If we let go of all of the hurt and the pain, and the things that traumatized us, and understand that it was never meant to hurt us. It was meant to mold us into the wonderful, beautiful people that we are and have always aspired to be.”
