After he and his wife just tied the knot, Max Teran was one of many new husbands faced with a challenging decision. He could either be the lone breadwinner or burden his future children with the prospect of having two working (and likely absent) parents.

Against prevailing conventional wisdom, he pleaded with his wife to quit her job once she first becomes pregnant. In a time when stay-at-home motherhood had become a big risk (while increasingly being frowned upon), the couple had to take huge leaps of faith to push this decision through.

Fast forward to today, they are the proud parents of five children. Max managed to be a strong sole provider while his wife did a wonderful job raising all these kids at home. When the kids reached adulthood, she was happy to re-enter the workforce, not because she had to but simply wanted to.

Appearing on America Tonight With Kate Delaney, Max has decided to share the secret of their success in his new book How to Procreate a Healthy Family.

Raising Healthy Kids Without Spanking

We talk a little bit more about the methods Max shares in his book. In it, there is a surprising mix of both traditional and non-traditional parenting practices, including the fact that he’s never raised a hand to his kids.

And now, his daughter has named one of her own kids after him.

These are just some of the heartwarming moments he shares that came about as a result of how he raised his family in a healthy manner. Going against the cynical narrative that raising such a healthy family in today’s world was impossible, he firmly believes that it still is.

The Alarming Rise in Autism Statistics

Another reason why Max wrote the book is due to the alarming shift in autism statistics. He remembered back in the 90s, the consensus was that only 1 in 1,000 kids were diagnosed with autism. But now, the number had suddenly become 1 child out of 43. This sudden shift greatly concerned him, and he hopes his book will share knowledge with the readers on how to keep the situation from getting out of hand.

Big, Quick Pieces of Advice from the Book

Originally, Max wanted a more down-to-earth title for his book: How to Procreate a Sane Family. However, he was quickly reminded by his publisher that it would be too offensive (despite how he feels that the risk to families these days seems to be homegrown insanity).

Though even with that said, he does not believe he deserves all the credit and responsibility for his family’s success. That’s why he considers the very first chapter of the book to have the most important advice.

The first chapter deals with prayer. And regardless of religion, Max firmly believes that faith (be it faith in God, the universe, etc.) can prove instrumental in bringing together all the necessary things when raising a healthy family.

To him, even the idea of mentally asking with the intention of obtaining positive answers is really just another way of describing prayer. Prayer is about surrendering intentions to the goodness that will answer, to knock on the door of the one who will open it.

Furthermore, he believes prayer and patience are what unite the two people best suited for each other for raising kids. He eschews the logic of mainstream dating where prospective partners are impatiently judged according to just one or two petty qualities. These are not enough to give the foundation for a great family. Praying to meet the right partner, to make the marriage work, and to persevere are incredibly important for the project of having a family.
