Greg Bruorton sat down with Kate Delaney to talk about his book on “America Tonight with Kate Delaney.”
Kate Delaney of “America Tonight with Kate Delaney” invited Greg Bruorton, author of Baby Jane, to share the story behind his book and how he came up with the idea of creating it. Kate described the book as fascinating as it compelled her to read the story even when traveling by plane or waiting for her belongings to come through the conveyor at the baggage claim.
Baby Jane by Greg Bruorton is a military/romance story following Sergeant Craig Donnelly as he finds a new mission to pursue as a paratrooper – adopt and take care of a baby. While parachuting, Craig’s steering lines got tangled, and he couldn’t unwrap himself from the canopy lines. He decided to search the drop zone and went through a path of vegetation where he heard whimpers. There, in the bushes, Craig discovered an abandoned baby that would soon change his life. Sharing a spark between them, compassionate Lieutenant Debra Simmons and Craig decided to pursue a new mission: take care of Baby Jane. Will they be able to achieve their goals when they are facing the complexities of military fraternization rules?
Greg was a Paratrooper
Kate Delaney asked author Greg Bruorton to share about his life experiences as they seemingly reflected the main character of his book. Greg is a retired paratrooper and has graduated from jump school.
“I graduated from jump school on June the 1st of 1973. I was a paratrooper ever since then until I retired in 1980. That was a joy to me. Now, the adrenaline rush we had and the camaraderie is even more important because when a war paratrooper sees another, he’s a brother all the way,” Greg shared.
Real Experiences Inspired the Story
Greg, as an author, uses his actual experiences to write his stories. He claimed that most of the characters’ experiences are based on true events, but these characters do not directly mirror him in the real world. Greg also stated that he experienced missing the landing because he could not untangle the canopy nylons of his parachute, making him miss the drop zone. This experience inspired his Baby Jane.
Greg is a Musician
Apart from his experience in the paratroop and being an author, Bruorton has another talent in his sleeves. He is a musician.
When asked about his musicianship, Greg shared that he came from a family of singers.
“I’ve always been around music. My three sisters [were] on the radio, singing country music and pop songs when I was younger, fourteen or fifteen years of age. I started playing the first guitar that was left behind [in] the house by a fellow that used to come and play. He went down to South Carolina to get married. [I] never saw him again.
“I had a good career of playing music. I taught guitar. [I] played in bands. I formed my own band.”
Plans for Future Books
Kate also asked Greg if he was going to continue writing other books. Inspiring stories from experiences, Greg already had stories about a guitar player and his student who grew up and joined the Army. He also had other stories based on the romance of blacks and whites and the life of hardy writers. He described these stories as “short but mostly novelettes.”
Takeaway
Kate Delaney asked Greg Bruorton about what he hopes his audience can take away from his book Baby Jane.
“They’re going to take away not only the glimpse of military life background in the paratrooper’s sense but also laugh in general that soldiers are humans too. They have feelings, they have love, they have bad happenings in their lives, and they have happy endings in their lives.
