Purpose, Providence, and the Human Experience
Every person needs a purpose in life, a reason they get up every day, something that they believe in that keeps them going as they go through the motions of the cycle. It is also completely normal that each one wishes to live a life of success. Prosperity is subjective for each individual, but it all boils down to one thing: a life lived with the feeling of fulfillment, and that starts with a person’s purpose in their life.
When it comes to achieving dreams, a person works hard and can only hope for the best – to get lucky. Alas, such is life that it is not all smooth sailing. Think of life like a Ferris wheel. You get on the ride from the bottom, then slowly go up, and then eventually go back down. Life is a cycle, where every person goes through the ups and downs. When life is good, it is also good to share your blessings, and when life is bad, it is important to remember that God is there for each and every one of us, and that is what From Curse to Covenantby James Clell O’Connoris about: bringing God’s grace to every reader’s life.
Sunsets, Seedlings, and Symbols: What the Cover Tells Us
They say that one should never judge a book by its cover. Well, I beg to differ. Especially when it is the kind that was made with taste and with the intention of depth. O’ Connor’s book cover design is one that I believe deserves to be praised, as I believe the design has excellently executed the author’s intention and message.
To start, you can see that a big part of the book cover is a pair of hands that are cupped, holding wheat. Along with that is a wonderful view of a field where the reader can also see a sunset or sunrise. Such a view can be interpreted in so many ways, depending on who is “judging the book by its cover.”
The way I see it, along with what I have read of the book, From Curse to Covenant, the book cover shows those who pick up a copy of the book the following messages (my personal interpretations):
- The sunset or sunrise brings a message of hope and appreciation, as it signifies the beauty of beginnings and endings in life.
- The cupped pair of hands holding wheat, showing that we are holding blessings in life that we must take care of and share when and what we can.
- The field that signifies that what we all do creates an impact and bears fruit.
With all that said, it connects to the core of the book, which is about giving and receiving. Or, to be more specific, the act of tithing. Once again, the book cover is tastefully made, as it holds a pleasing and fitting aesthetic to the message of the author’s written work.
Strength in Vulnerability
James Clell O’Connor’s way of writing is the kind that I truly believe every reader would greatly appreciate. At the start of the book is a chapter entitled “Should We Tithe?” The author shares a personal story about his past experience, and the way he wrote it is direct and to the point, but detailed at the same time. Most of all, James is a brave one, as he has written from the start in a vulnerable manner. Vulnerability takes strength, and that is exactly what he did.
As for the succeeding pages, James aims to clarify that there seems to be a misunderstanding when it comes to faith and the act of tithing. While sharing is indeed an important part of faith, from what I understand of what James has written, I agree that there should never be any pressure or, as mentioned in the book, any residual guilt in the area of giving.
This is the line that struck me most when I started reading From Curse to Covenant: “They spend their lives with an image of God, the shopkeeper, who they must come to with their money, or he will distance himself from them. They spend their lives believing that God is not entirely pleased with them because they have not satisfied Him with their giving.”
Purpose Within Reach: A Final Reflection
All in all, this is a good and quick read as the book contains only 80 pages. Yes, you read that right – 80 pages! This is the kind of book that I would definitely read again and would also recommend to friends and family.
I’m sure every reader of From Curse to Covenant will be left with a changed perspective of life once they close the last pages. The book is intimate, enlightening, and most of all, life-changing, as it will leave quite an impact.
For those who are ready to begin welcoming God’s grace into their lives and enter a life of purpose and fulfillment, order a copy on Amazon.
