Dee Bostic talks about her road to writing her medical novel Love, Lies & Lab Coats on “America Tonight with Kate Delaney.”
Love, Lies & Lab Coats
Love, Lies & Lab Coats by Dee Bostic is a medical drama that follows Travis, the brilliant chief medical technologist at the South Hill Medical Center in Spokane, Washington. He lives his perfect life at the medical center with his love interest and co-worker, Cindy. However, when Brent accepts the chief cardio-thoracic surgeon position, the perfect life turns into a toxic hell.
Brent and Travis used to be best friends at medical school, aiming to become the best doctors of their future. When Travis needed to stop pursuing medical education due to depression, Brent promised to make his life miserable when they crossed paths in the future.
Love, Lies & Lab Coats features several key characters, including the narcissist surgeon, the brilliant medical technologist, an insecure co-worker, two parking attendants, a talented chef, a middle-aged woman hiding from her past, a call girl, a sick child, and a devoted group of doctors. These characters meet together in the medical center, weaving their stories to share important lessons of a lifetime.
Dee Bostic appeared on the “Author’s Corner” segment of the syndicated radio program America Tonight with Kate Delaney, hosted by Emmy Award-winning broadcaster Kate Delaney, to talk about her process of creating the different characters in her book and how her story builds itself a realm that reflects the real world.
The Drive to Pursue the Passion
Kate Delaney asked Dee Bostic about how she came up with the idea of writing her medical drama. Dee shares that being an African-American in a predominantly white community made her pursue her passion for writing.
“I have moved to Washington state with the Air Force. Back in 1980, it was only 3% minority population. So, I was very much outnumbered, and it’s sometimes difficult to navigate in that state. So, I become a good listener. I listened to people’s stories. I have always enjoyed medical dramas and self-help books and love stories. So, as the time went on, I said, ‘I’m gonna write something about laboratory personnel because that’s where I worked.’”
Writing It Was an Out-of-body Experience
Love, Lies & Lab Coats features several characters that include a surgeon, medical technologist, call girl, patients, chef, parking attendants, and a group of doctors. Kate pointed this out and asked Dee about the process of creating the characters. Dee said she enjoyed it.
“I felt like they were doing it, and I was just sitting and typing stuff down. It may sound crazy, but it seemed like I had an out-of-body experience, and the book just kinda came together once I got all these people together. So, it was a fun experience.”
The Story Has a Little Something for Everyone
Kate said Dee’s book has a unique and provocative title. She let Dee talk a little about the book.
“We have a lot of different people in our world from very different backgrounds. For some reason, people feel like we can’t get along. So I created a lot of characters that came from all the different spaces and places and so on with different issues,” Dee said as she relayed back her writing process.
“It’s just, I think, a story that has a little something for everyone. I tackled some issues using social commentary. I wanted to guide them and do something different, not just stay in a hospital and show somebody. I just want to do something different and include all the people that make a hospital function.”
Dee also pointed out that other people who work in a real-world hospital are often overlooked. So she included characters who are parking attendants and a chef in her medical drama.
“They are often overlooked. You know, people just think doctors and nurses they’re the only people in the hospital, and that’s not the case. We all make that process work.”
3000 Miles of Separation
Dee also revealed in the interview that a new book is in the works – 3000 Miles of Separation. The book delves into the life of the narcissistic surgeon, dissecting his character even more. It is a prequel to Love, Lies & Lab Coats, which gives more information about the surgeon in the story.
“The next book, which is called ‘3000 Miles of Separation,’ is actually a prequel because there are some things that I wanted to include in this book, and I didn’t. The prequel includes his father, who was also a doctor.”
Screen Adaptation Possibility
Kate Delaney asked Dee if there were any plans to adapt her books to screen with all its fascinating characters. Dee said that she’s “looking forward to the possibility of it being picked up.” She’s been hearing people say that her book should be adapted into a film.
“That may be something else that I’d do in the future. I just kinda have my prayers going out there to the universe, and hopefully, I would be able to manifest that,” Dee said.
The Take-Away
Love, Lies & Lab Coats is a medical drama that takes different characters into an interweaving story, giving away lessons in life. Dee Bostic expected her audience to take away lessons from the issues that she brought up in the book.
“Maybe they’ll learn something from that situation. Just a simple thing like quit smoking or something or stop drinking soda so you don’t really run into type 2 diabetes. But I also hope they learn to never give up on love and forgiveness because we do not run into daily things with people. Sometimes, people hold grudges for years and years and years. I’ve fallen into that pit a couple of times myself. Let’s start loving more and forgiving more and trying to find some joy in your life.”Dee Bostic’s Love, Lies & Lab Coats Volume 1 is available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and ReadersMagnet Bookstore.
