When Dr. Joyce Addo-Atuah sat down with host Kate Delaney on America Tonight, the conversation went far beyond standard literary discussion. It offered a deep dive into the science, scripture, and lived experiences that prove gratitude is a life-altering practice. Centered on her book, Are You Grateful? Gratitude Living: Science, Scripture, & Testimonials Confirm Its Power, the interview illuminated how practicing gratitude daily shapes personal fulfillment, physical health, and emotional resilience.

A Remarkable Journey Fueling a Mission of Thanksgiving

Dr. Addo-Atuah’s path to becoming the “Global Gratitude Ambassador” is built on a series of extraordinary, divine events. Originating from Ghana, she trained as a pharmacist, received fully funded clinical training in the UK, and pioneered clinical pharmacy education and practice back in Ghana. She went on to serve in distinguished leadership roles, including National Pharmaceutical Advisor with the World Health Organization (WHO) in Ghana and as a member of the Ghana Health Service Council.

Her trajectory shifted toward the United States in 2000 while co-moderating a plenary session at the FIP Pharmacy World Congress in Vienna, Austria. Her standout co-moderation before an audience of 1,200 people earned her a standing ovation. It also led to a life-changing encounter with Dr. Dick Gourley, the then Dean of the College of Pharmacy, and his wife Dr. Greta Gourley, academic leaders from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, TN. This meeting paved the way for her move to the United States with two of her children to pursue her PhD, eventually leading to a long and distinguished career as a college professor from 2008 to 2025 at the Touro University, College of Pharmacy in New York City.

Reflecting on these supernatural doors opening throughout her life, Dr. Addo-Atuah felt a strong urge to write a thanksgiving book to express her deepest appreciation to God and the many individuals around the world who have  supported her along the way. However, as she began her research into the literature on thanksgiving and gratitude, she uncovered scientific validation for a personal phenomenon that had long puzzled her peers.

The Science Behind “Evergreen” Vitality

For years, family and friends had asked Dr. Addo-Atuah about her secret for maintaining a youthful, “evergreen” appearance, vibrant energy, and unyielding optimism. She had no deliberate secret; she was simply living a life of innate thankfulness. Through her research into positive psychology—citing prominent researchers like Dr. Robert Emmons from the University of California, Davis—she realized she was living proof of the documented health and wide-ranging benefits associated with gratitude.

During the interview, Dr. Addo-Atuah detailed the biological and psychological mechanisms of “gratitude living”:

  • Dopamine Release: Gratitude triggers the brain’s reward system, releasing dopamine and creating a positive feedback loop that encourages more experiences to be thankful for.
  • Serotonin Boost: Acting as a natural mood stabilizer, serotonin reduces stress, removes anxiety, and fosters deep inner peace and joy.
  • Oxytocin Production: Known as the social or bonding hormone, oxytocin enhances empathy, connection, and generosity, helping individuals build stronger relationships.
  • Physical and Mental Health Impacts: Research shows that gratitude living lowers cortisol levels, reduces blood pressure, normalizes blood sugar, and improves sleep quality, among others.

Dr. Addo-Atuah introduced one of the aphorisms she has developed in her capacity as the Global Gratitude Ambassador: “Gratitude, humility, empathy, and generosity are inseparable bedfellows”. She explained that true gratitude requires the humility to recognize that no one succeeds alone. This humility breeds empathy for others and the desire to pay it forward, which naturally overflows into active generosity.

Whole-Person and Organizational Gratitude Transformation

Are You Grateful? is designed as both an engaging narrative and a practical guidebook. It explores what gratitude truly is and what it is not, debunks common misconceptions, and outlines actionable steps to cultivate appreciation even during challenging times.

Beyond individual gratitude transformation—which Dr. Addo-Atuah addresses through her ARGGTM Framework—her work extends into leadership and organizational gratitude culture transformation through her ELEVATETM Framework. She also hosts Global Voices of Legacy and The Word Unfiltered podcasts on her YouTube channel, Crafters Global Communications. Ultimately, her message reminds readers that while happiness can be fleeting and dependent on external circumstances, gratitude living produces an enduring inner peace, resilience, and purpose that allows individuals to live fruitfully and uplift those around them.
