The Utgarda Trilogy is one of the latest pulp adventure book series by Joab Stieglitz.

If you think you have seen the last of the great works of pulp adventure, then author Joab Stieglitz will surprise you. Since the early part of the last decade, Joab Stieglitz has been writing pulp adventure stories. His stories are largely influenced by his love of RPG games as well as the works of H.P. Lovecraft, one of the most prominent authors of horror and weird fiction. Stieglitz’s works can be connected to sci-fi and computer games such as Call of Cthulhu, Pathfinder, Lamentations of Princess, and GUMSHOE to name a few. Stieglitz is a game master himself. In 2016, he finally released his first book, which would eventually be the start of The Utgarda Trilogy. Let us take a closer look at the book series that is catapulting Joab Stieglitz to pulp adventure superstardom.

The Old Man’s Request

The first book of the Utgarda trilogy is The Old Man’s Request. It was published in 2016. The Old Man’s request introduces us to the main characters of the series. It narrates the events that took place 5 decades ago. Here, we get to know Russian anthropologist Anna Rykov, Doctor Harry Lamb, and Father Sean O’Malley. The events that happened fifty years ago featured a group of students practicing the occult summoned an evil entity. Fast forward to present-day, one of the students, Jason Longborough, a trustee of Reister University, and the last of the students summons the main characters to aid him in destroying the evil have created five decades ago.

The Missing Medium

The Missing Medium is the prequel to The Old Man’s request and the second book in the Utgarda series. It was published in 2017. Father Sean O’Malley is summoned by his superiors in Rome because of the events of the first book known as the “Longborough Affair”. On the other side of the world, anthropologist Anna Rykov and Doctor Harry Lamb travel to New York to pursue the spirit medium. However, they soon will find out that what they are seeking is no ordinary medium and the path ahead is not a walk in the park. Filled with merchants, mobsters, madmen, and otherworldly characters, The Missing Medium is another thrilling adventure from Joab Steglitz.

The Other Realm

The third book in the Utgarda trilogy is entitled The Other Realm. It was published in 2018. In this final chapter, the protagonists discover Brian Teplow’s location. The three heroes travel to a secluded asylum to secure him. However, before they could grab him, Anna must travel to the land of Teplow’s imagination to get to him. Anna is surprised to find an entirely different world than the one suggested in the missing medium’s journal. The Other Realm is an exciting read filled with a new twist and certainly a fitting finale, but suggest also that another adventure is waiting for them after this one.

Overall, The Utgarda Trilogy is a brand new line of pulp fiction adventure that modern readers will love. For fans of Howard Philips Lovecraft, The Utgarda book series is a fine tribute to the creator of Cthulhu Mythos. However, Joab Stieglitz is more than that. It is a whole new adventure with consistent characters, a unique plotline, and a conflict that is both familiar and new at the same time. While H.P. Lovecraft’s influence throughout the series is very evident, readers will come to discover that Stieglitz does weave another adventure uniquely his own and will probably go on beyond the three-part series. In short, the Utgarda Trilogy is just the beginning of a whole new world of adventure that game master and writer Joab Stieglitz is creating.
